EXERCISE FIRST NIGHT: OCS INTAKE 24’S JUNGLE INTRODUCTION

TANAH JAMBU, Saturday 19 April 2025 – Officer Cadet School of Intake 24 conducted Exercise First Night, a two-day, one-night foundational fieldcraft training held at the Jungle Training Area, Defence Academy, Royal Brunei Armed Forces (JTA DA RBAF). This exercise marked the Officer Cadets’ (OCdts) first exposure to jungle operations and included their initial overnight stay in the field using the Individual Shelter System (ISS).

Throughout the exercise, OCdts received both theoretical and practical lessons covering essential fieldcraft competencies. These included the identification of jungle hazards, sourcing food and water under field conditions, maintaining personal hygiene, and the care and maintenance of individual equipment, including the machete.

Tactical training modules covered battle simulation inoculations using trip flares, illumination and smoke; sound and light discipline by day and night; camouflage and concealment; principles of visibility; and individual movement techniques within jungle terrain.

Exercise First Night tested the OCdts’ adaptability and resilience, serving as a critical building block for more complex training later in the Commissioning Course. It also strengthened their confidence and cultivated the practical leadership qualities required for operating effectively in challenging field environments.
