PENANJONG GARRISON, Monday, 11 September 2023 - As the Land Force Officer Cadets (OCdts) of Officer Cadet School (OCS) Intake 22 advance in their Special-to-Service term, they were involved with the Chemical Biological Radiological and Explosive Defence (CBRE) unit, a one-day lesson where OCdts learned the proper procedures and strategies the CBRE unit uses to fight against any chemical warfare agents.
The Odts went through a series of theory lessons on the types of Mission Oriented Protective Posture (MOPP), conducted by experienced instructors there. After being briefed on the safety precautions, the knowledge gained by the OCdts were put to the test when faced with the practical portion where they overcame the gas chamber, which was loaded with controlled concentration of Orto-chlorobenzylidene-malonitrile (CS), commonly known as tear gas. The OCdts’ physical and mental strength were tested with a series of physical training exercises inside the gas chamber and challenged to endure the tear gas without the use of a gas mask for a whole minute under supervision.
The experience offered practical insights into the importance of ensuring correct donning of personal protective equipment and mask, and to gain confidence in wearing them while achieving CBRE’s missions. The day concluded with the cadets having a rewarding and knowledgeable experience both in the classroom and on the field, catching a glimpse of the difficulties that CBRE unit has to undertake for the safety of Brunei Darussalam if a chemical threat arises.
