TANAH JAMBU, Thursday, 14 January 2020 – The Officer Cadets of Intake 19 had the honour of having sharing session with the Commander of Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), Major General (U) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sahat, today at the Officer Cadet School Lecture Theater. Among the attendees were Chief of Staff of RBAF, Acting Commandant of Defence Academy, Commanding Officer of Officer Cadet School and Officer Cadets of intake 19.
The session highlighted four main aspects that the Commander values and see to give clarity towards the Officer Cadets what being an Officer truly means. As the Commander stated, these values are necessary for young military officers to perform their duties well: discipline, core values, integrity and commitment as the vital traits in RBAF. Once commissioned as military officers, they will become role models and instill these values, especially in Islamic values, to their subordinates through proper leadership. The highest commitment and integrity is expected for future officers, especially in the security department. Discipline is also critically emphasised during the session in which the RBAF does not ever compromise.
The Commander of RBAF emphasised that young officers also must relate their spirituality into their daily life and in the future, if possible, institutionalize Islam. In order to maintain discipline, the Commander stressed the importance of prayer and to remember the pledges the young officers gave prior to joining the OCS.
Young officers must also keep learning and be aware of the current issues and analyse them, regardless of whether it is regional or international, current technology trends, and regardless of time. Learning is a never-ending process, and it will inevitably enhance a Young Officer’s ability to think logically, critically and analytically. The timeless process of obtaining knowledge could help young officers develop ingenious ideas, whether to create new tactics, technology, or ways to leave a footprint wherever they go and leave behind a great legacy. The Commander also insinuated that Muslim young officers should start learning Hadiths to instill the spiritualistic way of leading men and women.
Lastly, the session ended with a warm message from the Commander of the RBAF. He states that the Officer Cadets must be able to deal and endure any challenges and obstacles throughout their career, as, in the end, a career in the RBAF can prove to be very fulfilling.
