TANAH JAMBU, Tuesday, 28 July 2020 – A session today with the Commandant of Defence Academy was held by the Officer Cadet School at the Lecture Theater, OCS Headquarter. Present was the Guest of Honor, the Commandant of Defence Academy, Brigadier General Haji Muhammad Haszaimi bin Bol Hassan. Among the attendees were Officers, Academy Sergeant Major, School Sergeant Major and Officer Cadets of Intake 19.
This sharing session highlighted characteristics and skills that the Commandant valued and saw as necessary to be instilled into young military officers, including time management skills, discipline, and moral courage. Additionally, he emphasised four traits to abide by: honesty, sincerity, integrity and piety (tawakkal). These qualities are important as once Officer Cadets are commissioned as military officers, it is expected for them to be disciplined and selfless since they will be role models for the men under their command; as per the Commandant, there are no great leaders without followers.
The Commandant’s speech was followed by a question-and-answer session in which the Commandant provided thought-provoking answers to the questions posed by Officer Cadets. The Commandant again emphasized that young officers must have leadership traits and show others effective leaderships through their conduct and behaviour. He also mentioned that the training for Intake 19 had to be adjusted due to the corona virus pandemic, which allowed Officer Cadets to explore subjects for which previous intakes had only covered briefly, such as the Individual Military Appreciation Process (IMAP).
The Officer Cadet School, formed in 2008, is a place for young military officers to build their characters and develop their leadership skills. This is so they will be able to handle the great responsibilities at their respective units that will be entrusted towards them.
